Coach Lee Wiginton with representatives from the Dallas Cowboys

Allen High School head football coach Lee Wiginton has been named the Dallas Cowboys’ nominee for the 2025 Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year Award. The prestigious award, established by the NFL in 2010, recognizes high school coaches who represent the values of Hall of Fame coach Don Shula, including integrity, leadership, character, and a deep commitment to both players and the broader community.

Each of the 32 NFL teams selects one coach annually for this honor. Coach Wiginton joined an elite group of nominees from across the country who were considered for national recognition, which includes special acknowledgment at the Pro Bowl Games and Super Bowl LX.

Although Coach Wiginton was not selected as one of the two national winners, this year’s award recipients are Dylen Smith of Palisades Charter High School, nominated by the Los Angeles Chargers, and Dave Ettinger of Garden City High School, nominated by the New York Giants. Both were honored during the NFL’s weeklong celebration of football. They also attended Super Bowl LX for recognition at the NFL Honors.

Coach Wiginton has built a reputation for fostering not just athletic excellence but personal growth in his athletes. The Don Shula Award emphasizes a commitment to player health and safety, strong character, and community involvement. These qualities have been central to Wiginton’s coaching philosophy.

While only two coaches ultimately receive the national award, all 32 nominees are celebrated for their contributions to the sport and their positive influence on young athletes. The winners receive a $15,000 award for their football programs and a $10,000 personal award, funded by the NFL Foundation and Jersey Mike’s. All nominees receive a $1,000 award for their programs.

Congratulations to Lee Wiginton for being named the Dallas Cowboys’ 2025 Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year nominee.
