Allen ISD students are gaining hands-on experience through the Allen FFA Volunteer Puppy Raising Program. In partnership with Canine Companions, participating students help raise and socialize puppies that may one day become service dogs for people with disabilities. The program gives students an opportunity to apply lessons in animal care while taking on the responsibility of raising a future service dog.
As volunteer puppy raisers, students care for the puppies at home while teaching basic commands and introducing them to different environments, people, and everyday experiences. These experiences help build the confidence and skills the puppies need before moving on to professional training with Canine Companions. Along the way, students gain firsthand experience in responsibility, leadership, and community service.
