Two Students fly drone at STEAM Day at Green Elementary

Green Elementary recently hosted its annual STEAM Day, transforming classrooms into centers of innovation and hands-on learning with the students taking the lead.

Organized by Gifted and Talented AIM teacher Carrie Sledge, the event featured 4th through 6th grade AIM students stepping into the role of teachers. From planning and lesson design to full implementation, students created and led engaging activities focused on science, technology, engineering, art, and math.

"Some of these students are stepping far outside their comfort zones, and others are shining in their element," said Sledge, "but each one is rising to the challenge with heart, grit, and creativity. I am beyond proud of every single one of them."

STEAM Day began 17 years ago as an environmental project and has grown each year. What started as a small initiative became STEM, then Math and Science Day, and now a full-scale STEAM experience led entirely by students. This year’s lessons featured drone deliveries, catapult experiments, space exploration, invention design, and 3D printing.

"I'm so proud of Ms. Sledge for creating these student-led opportunities on STEAM Day that empower our students to create, solve problems, and stick with something even when it’s hard," said Principal Stacia Butler. "Days like this show the power of hands-on learning and the resilience our students are building."

STEAM Day reflects Allen ISD’s goals of developing empowered learners and building future-ready skills through student-driven and collaborative experiences.

It was a day filled with discovery, confidence, and celebration of student voice in action.
