Chandler balloon parade students with their floats

Chandler Elementary AIM students recently hosted a unique recreation of the iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, complete with handmade balloon floats and robot-powered movement. The event was designed to blend creativity, history, and technology while engaging younger grades in the school library.

Fifth- and sixth-grade AIM students studied the origins of the parade, which first took place in 1924, and discovered that balloon floats were introduced in 1927. Inspired by these findings, they created their own versions of popular character balloons, modeled after Macy’s famous designs.

The floats featured characters selected by a schoolwide vote, which took place in the library using sticker ballots. Each grade participated, and the most popular character overall was K-Pop D.H., followed closely by Minecraft and Dog Man. The results were proudly displayed on a colorful bar graph near the exhibit.

During the event, students guided younger classes through the parade, explained the history behind it, and shared facts about the characters and float-making process. The floats were pulled through the library by robots, adding a layer of innovation to the presentation.

Congratulations to the AIM students for bringing history to life with creativity and teamwork.
